Instead of grade 10, 11 or 12, students will prepare to write their final GED exams. These total approx. 7 hours and can be done over a few days. The GED replaces grades 10-12 and we have condensed that into 2 years of study. We offer GED Level 1 (a grade 10 and half of grade 11 replacement) and GED Level 2 (a half of grade 11 and 12 replacement). This makes a total of 11 years studying, instead of 12 years. At the end of successfully completing GED Level 2 with us, students will be sufficiently prepared to write their GED final exams.

Once successful, you will receive your GED® transcript from GED Testing Service and a GED® credential from the Office of State Superintendent of Education in Washington, DC. The GED® credential signifies that the student has met the prevailing standards of high school in the United States. In addition, colleges and employers in many countries accept the GED® credential as equal to their country’s high school diploma.

In the United States, 98% of colleges and universities that require a high school diploma accept the GED credential and 96% of companies accept applicants with a GED credential for jobs requiring a high school diploma. All fifty states in the United States officially offer the GED exams and it has been written by more than 17 million people and is offered via 3400 exam centres worldwide!

Our advice is to take the following courses, depending on a student’s goals after completing high school:

1) If a student does NOT wish to proceed onto Tertiary studies, he will need to take the GED exam/test as a minimum requirement.  In addition,  we recommend the Cyber School Premium course, for GED Level 1 and Level 2 (the last 2 years of high school) that will supplement his English knowledge and skills which will greatly improve his future career prospects.

2) If a student DOES wish to proceed onto Tertiary studies, the GED and SAT exams/tests are a minimum requirement. In addition, we recommend the Cyber School Premium course, for GED Level 1 and Level 2 (the last 2 years of high school) which will increase the students chances of attaining a higher SAT English score and coping better during his Tertiary studies plus of course would benefit him in his future career.

Many students are not cut out to fit into the “matric mould”. Some are failing whilst others are not fitting in with the curriculum. Many more, won’t or have no intention of going onto university. However, all need a vocation! All of us need to earn a living and graduating from high school is not enough; students need specific skills that allow them to specialise and be good at something!

So for many, the high school matric is a stepping stone to a tertiary qualification, whether it be at a university or a college.

Amazingly, South Africa has no plan to help those that aren’t great academics to stay within the academic system. Instead, many drop out as they are disillusioned and their self esteem is rock bottom as they have perhaps failed Maths or Science. They end up dropping out and becoming part of a “forgotten” community of ex students.

Even more bizarre is the fact that there is no standard Dept. of Education high school equivalency test that enables students to farther their studies at a tertiary level. So if they drop out, the system tries to keep them down and inhibits their ability to get back on track and into mainstream education.

In 1942, The Unites States recognised that they needed a system to help World War 2 veterans to catch up time lost whilst fighting in the war instead of studying in the classroom. They developed the GED test, a high school equivalency test that if passed, would be recognised for farther studies at a tertiary level. Since then, the GED has been written by more than 17 million students! One in 9 high school diplomas in the United States are GED graduates, and 1 in 20 university graduates have GED diplomas.

A past student of ours has kindly sent us copies of his certificate and transcript;

The GED test is created by the collaborative efforts of secondary school educators, adult educators, and subject matter experts. In order to ensure the fairness and accuracy of the GED tests, each question is scrutinized by test specialists.

Candidates who do not anticipate attending an undergraduate school or university after obtaining their GED will have the opportunity to pursue a greater number of jobs than if they had not obtained their GED. Many candidates who pursue a GED report doing so in order to get better jobs resulting in better income. Many candidates report that obtaining a GED makes them feel better about themselves. Obtaining a GED should be viewed as an investment in one’s future.

The GED test can be written in South Africa (centres available thoroughout South Africa), and is typically a total of seven hours of exams. To do that, click here.

N.B. To write the GED, you must be at least 17 years old. The GED exams will be taken via an independent, third party organisation. Cyber School does not benefit financially from any student referral. The approximate total cost of all exams and the diploma is the equivalent of US$240 ($60 per subject) (This cost should be verified at time of booking).

Whilst we do focus on GED preparation, we also place great emphasis on offering a broad based and holistic educational foundation for all our students. For us, passing the GED is not the only goal. Receiving a well rounded education is. We try to instil discipline and a work or study ethic and culture that will benefit each student in their farther studies, in the workplace, and in life in general.

In this context, we do not see the GED as a quick fix or shortcut, but rather a practical alternative to an ever increasing problem of a matric that is declining in academic value by the day, is inflexible and rigid to the point that it no longer caters for many students that are “falling through the cracks,” or those that don’t fit the mould that has been created for them by an institution that inadequately caters for the challenges of tomorrow.

The four tests are designed to measure the knowledge and skills that a student should have acquired after four years in high school. One important thing about the tests is that even though the questions may involve a specific area of study such as science, you don’t have to memorize specific facts, details, dates, or even exact definitions. Much of this information is given to you in the test itself. You will have to be able to read and understand the material that is presented and then to answer questions about it.
