Importance of specific skills in professional development.

Competencies are those that demonstrate that a student is ready for professional development.

The term competencies represents the ability of a person to put into practice all the thoughts, knowledge, abilities and values when acting in a specific environment or context. Cognitive resources that intervene in the development of an individual are considered, at a personal, social and work level.

Specific competences are acquired through the transmission and assimilation of a person, from content that refers to various areas of knowledge, such as concepts, theories, research skills, instrumental knowledge, work styles, etc. that specify a specific discipline.

These specific skills are related to a person’s ability to know how to act in a specific work environment and carry out their professional development.

Traditional university institutions, despite being the closest educational center to the world of work, do not give so much importance to these skills and are more prone to the transmission of knowledge than to the practical application of it, especially in more traditional careers or field of social sciences.

However, the equalization and similarity of the training of graduates entering the labor market and competing to obtain the same jobs, has highlighted the value of specific skills as a way to improve employability and differentiate professional profiles. Currently, there are millions of specific skills on the market, requiring applicants to know how to successfully differentiate themselves from the rest.
