Soft skills – What are they really and what can you do to put them into practice?

Large companies around the world have stopped giving so much importance to the number of diplomas that a candidate has to move to focus on the development of their soft or transversal skills, the so-called soft skills set their sights on the professionals who have been able to develop these skills in parallel to their studies. But what are they really and what can you do to put them into practice? What is all this?

What are soft skills?

Soft skills can be defined as those competencies or capacities that aim to promote and reinforce interpersonal relationships together with other people who form a team. These prepare us to face various situations that involve carrying out projects, a good work environment, proposing new ideas for growth, among other tasks.

Therefore, having the ability to lead a team, or calm a nervous client, to be on time for meetings are good examples of soft skills.

We can also define them as the ability to develop empathy to put yourself in the other’s place, or the virtue of always having a positive approach to solving problems, they serve both to work and to live.

There is an extensive list of soft skills, we will try to mention the most important ones.

Being clear when communicating any eventuality, whether good or bad, is essential.

  1. Creativity

Having inventiveness of your own, thinking outside the herd and generating innovative ideas is one of the most sought-after skills.

  1. Responsibility

It’s about knowing how to make commitments, meet deadlines, be on time, respect others’ times, etc.

  1. honesty

It is essential to be honest both when it comes to claiming recognition and making complaints and acknowledging mistakes and taking responsibility without pointing out to others.

  1. Proactivity

Is there a problem? What you should do is take charge of the matter and find your own solutions without constantly disturbing the boss.

  1. Resilience

Resilience is a term coined by modern psychology and identified with the ability to turn complicated and traumatic situations into important life lessons.

  1. Teamwork

It is about having the right tolerance and diplomacy to deal with different types of personalities.

  1. Empathy

Putting yourself in the other’s shoes is essential, not only for positions with a certain responsibility, but also for the rest of the team members.

  1. Adaptation to change.

Companies, like society, are constantly changing. Having the ability to change the changes that appear is one of the most in-demand soft skills today.

Are they innate or can they develop?

They can certainly develop, although some people have probably already been born with some advantage.

To develop soft skills, the first step must be taken, at first, these difficulties of a change in our behavior and in the way we face certain situations.
